Andhra Pradesh land is bought, sold and talked about in a mix of units that don't appear on any national standard — some come from British-era survey practice, some from Telugu custom. A gajam is simply a square yard (9 square feet) and is the most common unit for plots in Tirupati and across Rayalaseema. An ankanam, used mostly for older residential plots and temple-adjacent land around Tirupati, equals 36 square feet — roughly a 6x6 foot room, which is where the name and the size both come from.
A cent (435.6 square feet, or 1/100th of an acre) is the standard unit for agricultural and semi-urban land across both Telugu states and much of South India. A guntha (1,089 square feet, or 1/40th of an acre) shows up more in revenue and survey records than in everyday buying and selling.
